Assignment #2: Logo Critique

Logo Critique

1. Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium

This logo is so impressive because of the hidden optical illusion. The logo appears at first glance to just be a tree and birds, but when you look closely  you realize that it is formed from the negative space created by the profiles of a gorilla and a lion. Once you realize it, it's something that you will never un-see. The artist was able to create a very clever, creative image while still maintaining a simple, professional appearance.

2. Tostitos

I love the Tostitos logo. It, like the Pittsburgh Zoo logo, has a hidden image. The two lowercase "t"'s are actually two people sharing a chip over a bowl of salsa (which is also the dot on the "i"). Tostitos chips are frequently bought to go with salsa to have at parties and this logo gives off a community feel and the bright colors set a fun tone.

3. Amazon

The amazon logo offers a blatant description of what the company is known for. There is an arrow pointing from the "a" to the "z", representing how amazon.com truly does sell the expression, "everything from a to z". It is a simple logo which is good for a company like Amazon because the logo is shown so many places like packaging labels, emails, and receipts.

4. Mercedes-Benz

The Mercedes logo is one connected with prestige. Many people pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to don this image of wealth and power. Ironically, dominance was the intention behind the design of this logo. The three points of the star represent land, air, and sea, the three elements that Mercedes-Benz has mastered.

5. Starbucks

Starbucks originated in Seattle, Washington which at the time was a very nautical town with lots of sailing and seaports. The woman in the logo, a siren, is a greek mythological creature that was chosen to fit the nautical vibe of the city. What probably wasn't thought of during the logo selection is that sirens are actually evil creatures that according to legend, would kill sailors for sport. Despite the gory, true meaning, it is one of the most popular logos in America.
